Type 2 Diabetes. What is it and how can it be managed?

Jan 16, 2024

Type 2 diabetes is a sneaky little devil and occurs most commonly in middle aged and older adults.   It is a chronic condition that occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin or does not use insulin effectively. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels in the body.  The regulation of blood sugar levels is important because high blood sugar levels can lead to a host of health complications.

Symptoms of type 2 diabetes include increased thirst and urination, fatigue, blurred vision, and slow healing of cuts and wounds. The condition can be managed through a combination of lifestyle changes and medication.

To manage type 2 diabetes, it is important to maintain a healthy diet that is low in sugar and refined carbohydrates.  The list below are items that should be avoided by most of us but especially those with diabetes.

  • Sugar-sweetened beverages. Sugary beverages are the worst drink choice for someone with diabetes. ...
  • Trans fats. Artificial trans fats are extremely unhealthy. ...
  • White bread, rice, and pasta. ...
  • Fruit-flavored yogurt. ...
  • Sweetened breakfast cereals. ...
  • Flavored coffee drinks. ...
  • Honey, agave nectar, and maple syrup. ...
  • Dried fruit

Regular physical activity is also important, as it can help to lower blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity.  Medications can also be used to help control blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.

It's important for people with type 2 diabetes to have regular check-ups with their healthcare provider to monitor their blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and cholesterol, and to check for any complications of the condition.
