Tendons: A quick tutorial
Mar 30, 2019Do you know what a tendon is and what it does? Tendons are tough cords of fibrous tissue that connect muscle to bone and are crucial to our mobility. Ligaments connect bone to bone.
Found throughout the body, tendons pull the attached bone into action. They vary in size and shape depending on the function of the muscle it attaches to and are bunched together to form bundles.
Tendinitis is an inflammation or irritation of a tendon resulting from a sudden injury or repetitive impact on the tissue. Most tendonitis is caused by using the same joints and doing the same stressful movements over and over. This is true for athletes who may run a lot and develop achilles tendonitis, tennis players who develop tennis elbow, as well as office workers who do repetitive wrist movements.
What we can do about it?
Prevention is always my first suggestion and that can be accomplished by wearing correct shoes, support added around the working joint and especially, switching up your program to avoid repetitive stress.
Rest is super important when tendonitis strikes. Do your best to avoid using the injured tendon. Ice may be helpful as well. Healing usually takes about 2 to 4 weeks. Of course, see a doctor if pain does not go away or an injury is severe.
